So, you want to work with flowers? Whether you’re dreaming of becoming a florist or just want to create some stunning floral designs for yourself, finding your authentic style is key.  It’s not about copying trends or trying to fit in.  It’s about creating something that truly feels you.  So, here are five steps to help you curate your own floral style, starting today!

1. Start Collecting What Inspires You

First things first - gather inspiration.  Anything that makes you feel something.  Head to Pinterest, Google, or Instagram and start collecting images that speak to you.  Maybe it’s a specific flower, like dusty pink roses, or maybe it’s the texture of an old wooden vase.  There’s no need to overthink it, just gather what feels right. This is all about you.

2. Find the Common Threads

Now that you’ve got a bounty of images, take a step back.  What do they all have in common?  Are there certain colours or textures that pop up a lot?  Maybe it’s soft, muted tones or perhaps you can’t get enough of bold, vibrant blooms.  Group them together, and start looking for those patterns.  These connections are the backbone of your floral style - they’re your design vocabulary in the making.

3. Refine, Refine, Refine

This part’s crucial. Take a good, hard look at what you’ve collected and start editing.  Does this image still resonate with you?  Does it feel authentic?  If something doesn’t feel right, toss it out. Your mood board isn’t about perfection; it’s about reflecting what makes you tick. Keep refining until your collection feels true to your vision and your creative instincts.

4. Get Your Hands in the Flowers

Alright, here’s where the fun begins, start creating!  Don’t worry about getting it perfect, that’s not the point.

Start simple, maybe with The Bud Vase, The Jam Jars or a Hand Tied Bouquet  bouquet.  I've shared the techniques for creating these inside First Steps with Flowers, but now it’s time to use the elements you feel connected to from your mood board.  Don’t be afraid to experiment!  Mix the colours and your flower choices as you see fit.  As you start working, you’ll see your style slowly come together. Trust the process, and most importantly, trust yourself.

5. Share What You Create and Build Your Brand

Now, here’s the kicker - once you’ve made something you love, share it.  Whether it’s on Instagram, in your portfolio, or just with friends and family, share your creations with the world.  Sharing is how you’ll refine your style even further. The more you share, the clearer your style becomes, and the more you’ll attract the kind of clients who really connect with your work. This is how you build a brand that’s truly yours.
